Traditional Basil Pesto

From an abundance of basil to something worth savoring.

Our Small-Batch Basil Pesto starts with fresh basil grown right here at the 4Roots Farm Campus. Across the farm, basil grows in several of our growing systems—from the greenhouse and aquaponics system to raised garden beds tended and reset with the help of children participating in our summer education programs, as well as our in-ground growing areas.

Basil plays an important role on the farm beyond the kitchen. We use it as a companion plant throughout our growing spaces, where its flowers help attract pollinators and support a thriving farm ecosystem. Sometimes, that means we end up with more beautiful basil than we can sell fresh.

Rather than allowing that abundance to go to waste, our team found another purpose for it.

We harvest the basil and turn it into pesto right here at Fresh by 4Roots, making each batch in small quantities with extra-virgin olive oil, garlic, nutritional yeast, lemon juice, a touch of salt, and your choice of traditional pine nuts or sunflower seeds.
