Are you tired of the same old boring vegetable dishes? Looking to add a little pizzazz to your dinner table? Well, look no further than this Baked Brussels Sprouts au Gratin recipe! It's a mouthwatering twist on a classic dish that will have your taste buds doing a happy dance.

What makes this dish so special?

First off, let's talk about the star of the show - Brussels sprouts. These little green gems are often overlooked, but when baked to perfection, they become crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It's like a flavor explosion in your mouth!

How do you make it?

Start by preheating your oven to 400 degrees. While that's heating up, trim the ends off your Brussels sprouts and cut them in half. Toss them in a mixture of olive oil, salt, and pepper, then spread them out on a baking sheet. Pop them in the oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until they're nice and golden brown.

While the Brussels sprouts are baking, whip up a simple cheese sauce. Melt butter in a saucepan, then whisk in flour to make a roux. Slowly pour in milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. Add in your favorite cheese (cheddar works great!) and stir until it's nice and melty.

Once the Brussels sprouts are done baking, pour the cheese sauce over the top and sprinkle with breadcrumbs. Pop it back in the oven for a few minutes until the breadcrumbs are golden brown and crispy. Voila! You've got yourself a dish that will have everyone asking for seconds.

Why should you give it a try?

Not only is this Baked Brussels Sprouts au Gratin recipe delicious, but it's also a great way to get your veggies in. Plus, it's a fun and quirky dish that will impress your friends and family. So go ahead, give it a try and let your taste buds thank you later!

Makes: 8 servings

Cook Time: 30 min

Calories: 221 kcal/serving

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds Brussels sprouts halved lengthwise (quartered if large)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • ⅔ cup heavy cream
  • 1½ cups sharp cheddar cheese
  • shredded, divided
  • ¼ cup parmesan cheese shredded

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Rinse brussels sprouts and remove any wilted outer leaves. Cut them in half (or quarters if they are large).
  3. Toss halved Brussels sprouts with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Cook in a skillet over medium-high heat for 5-6 minutes or until tender-crisp and slightly browned. Pour into a 2 qt dish.
  4. In the same skillet, heat heavy cream, onion powder, salt, and pepper until boiling. Reduce heat and let simmer over medium heat for 2 minutes to thicken slightly.
  5. Remove from heat and whisk in parmesan cheese. Stir in 1 cup of cheddar cheese. Pour over Brussels sprouts.
  6. Top with remaining ⅓ cup cheddar cheese and bake for 20-25 minutes or until browned and bubbly.

Note:

  • Frozen Brussels sprouts can be used and should be thawed and heated first.
  • For the best sauce, shred your own cheeses. Packaged cheeses don't always melt smoothly.
  • Prepare ahead and refrigerate for up to 2 days before baking. Remove from the fridge and let rest on the counter while the oven preheats. If the gratin is cold from the fridge, you may need to add 5 minutes of extra baking time.
